Unattended remote access lets you connect to a computer when nobody is sitting at it. You can fix your office PC from home at night, update a shop's till computer before opening time, or check a server on a Sunday. This guide explains what unattended remote access is, when to use it, and how to set it up safely.

What is unattended remote access?

There are two kinds of remote access:

  • Attended access: someone is at the other computer. They open the app and accept your connection. This is how you help a person.
  • Unattended access: nobody needs to be there. The app runs in the background, and you connect with a password or from your account.

Attended access is like being invited in. Unattended access is like having your own key. Both are useful, but a key needs more care.

When unattended remote access makes sense

Use it for computers that you or your company are responsible for:

  • Your own computers, like an office PC you reach from home.
  • Company PCs and servers that your IT team manages.
  • Customer computers under a support contract, with the customer's written agreement.
  • Computers without a user, such as a reception screen, a till, or a machine in a warehouse.

Do not set it up on someone's computer without their clear permission. For a one-off favour, attended access is the better choice.

How to set up unattended remote access

The exact buttons differ between tools, but the steps are the same. Here they are with Remotless.

  1. Install the app on the computer you want to reach. Running it is not enough; it must be installed so it starts with Windows. See Install Remotless on Windows.
  2. Log in with your company account in the app. The computer then appears in your company's list in the dashboard.
  3. Set a permanent password for that computer in the app's settings. Make it long and unique.
  4. Test it. From another computer, connect to its ID and enter the password.

Our help guide Set up unattended access goes through each step.

Security checklist for unattended access

A computer you can always reach is also a target. These rules keep the door locked.

Use long, unique passwords

Use a different password for each computer, at least 12 characters long. A password manager makes this easy. Never reuse your e-mail or Windows password.

Turn on two-step login for every account

If your account can open many computers, a stolen password must not be enough. Two-step login adds a code from your phone. Company owners in Remotless can require it for the whole team.

Give each person their own login

Shared logins hide who did what. With separate accounts, the session history shows exactly which technician connected. You can also remove one person without changing everything.

Keep the history and check it

Look at your session history from time to time. Unknown times, IP addresses or names are a reason to change passwords at once.

Remove computers you no longer manage

When a contract ends or a PC is replaced, remove it from your list. Fewer open doors mean fewer risks.

Keep the app updated

Updates fix security issues. Remotless tells you when a new version is ready.

Unattended remote access for teams

For a support team, unattended access turns into a shared list of managed computers. Good tools help you stay in control:

  • a list of all computers, with online status and app version,
  • roles, so technicians connect but only admins change settings,
  • a full session history for every computer,
  • a quick way to remove a person and end their logins.

Remotless includes all of this. New companies are verified once before they can add computers for unattended access. That small step keeps abusers out of the platform.

Unattended access is also a natural next step after you learn to spot a tech support scam: the same caution applies.
