How to access another computer remotely: a step-by-step guide
Learn how to access another computer remotely in about a minute: what you need, step-by-step instructions, attended vs unattended access, and safety tips.

Need to access another computer remotely? Maybe a colleague is stuck, a parent cannot open an e-mail, or you left a file on your office PC. With the right tool, it takes about a minute. This guide shows you how, step by step, and how to do it safely.
What you need to access another computer remotely
Remote access means you see another computer's screen on yours. You can also use its mouse and keyboard as if you were sitting in front of it. You need three things:
- A remote desktop app on both computers. The person you help runs it too. With Remotless, it does not even need to be installed.
- An internet connection on both sides. A normal home or office connection is enough.
- Permission. The other person accepts your connection, or you set up access to your own PC in advance.
That last point matters most. Only connect to computers you are allowed to use. Never let a stranger connect to yours.
Step by step: connect in about a minute
Here is how it works with Remotless. Most modern tools follow the same pattern.
- Both people open the app. The other person downloads it from remotless.com/download and opens the file.
- The other person reads you their ID. It is a 9-digit number shown in the app window.
- Type the ID and click Connect. You enter the number in your own app.
- They accept. A window shows them who is connecting. They click Accept.
- You are in. You now see their screen and can help.
Either of you can end the session at any time. For more detail, read our help guide Connect to another computer.
Attended or unattended access?
There are two ways to use remote access. The right one depends on whether someone sits at the other computer.
Attended access is for helping a person. They are at their computer, they start the app, and they accept you. When the session ends, you have no way back in. This is the safest choice for one-off help.
Unattended access is for reaching a computer when nobody is there. Think of your own office PC, a shop's till computer or a server. You install the app on that computer and protect it with a strong password. Then you can connect at any time. Our guide Set up unattended access explains the details.
What you can do during a session
Once connected, you work on the other computer as if it were in front of you. Typical tasks include:
- fixing a setting or an error message,
- installing or updating a program,
- showing someone how to do something, step by step,
- copying files between the two computers,
- chatting with the person while you work.
Good tools also adjust the picture to the connection. On a slow network, lower the image quality for a smoother session.
How to access another computer remotely and stay safe
Remote access is powerful. That is exactly why criminals abuse it. These habits keep you and the people you help safe.
Only connect when you expect it
Accept a connection only when you started the conversation. Real banks, tax offices and software companies do not call you and ask for remote access. If someone does, hang up.
Use a tool with end-to-end encryption
Encryption scrambles the screen and keystrokes on the way. With end-to-end encryption, even the service in the middle cannot watch your session. Remotless sessions are end-to-end encrypted.
Turn on two-step login
Your remote access account can open doors to many computers. Protect it with a code from your phone as well as your password. Here is how to turn on two-step login.
Keep a record
A session history shows who connected, when and for how long. It helps you answer the question "who was on my PC?" with facts. Remotless keeps this history for every company account.
Common problems and quick fixes
Most connection problems have simple causes:
- "ID not found" or offline: make sure the app is open on the other computer and that it is online.
- Nothing happens after Connect: the other person may need to click Accept. Ask them to look for the window.
- A company network blocks it: ask the IT team to allow the app, or test from another network.
- The picture is slow: lower the quality in the session toolbar and pause big downloads.
Still stuck? Our checklist Can't connect? Try these steps covers the rest.
